The First Doctor Badge
From the show’s start in 1963 through to 1966, Hartnell played the Doctor as an irascible old man in Edwardian dress. His granddaughter Susan (Carol Ann Ford) and her teachers Barbara (Jacqueline Hill) and Ian (William Russell) accompanied him their adventures through time and space intended to educate young viewers about history and science. The introduction of the Daleks in the second serial secured the show’s success, leading to it becoming on the world’s longest running science fiction series. Hartnell’s Doctor later met the Cybermen and was joined by orphan Vicki (Maureen O’Brien), space pilot Steven Taylor (Peter Purves), ancient Trojan Katerina (Adrienne Hill), Sara Kingdom (Jean Marsh), Dodo Chaplet (Jackie Lane), Polly (Anneke Wills) and sailor Ben Jackson (Michael Craze).
The Second Doctor Badge
Regenerating from William Hartnell in The Tenth Planet, Troughton’s tenure as the Doctor between 1966 and 1969 saw the show move towards faster paced stories with more monsters. Often described as a cosmic hobo, Troughton’s Doctor favoured a baggy suit and bow tie and often played the penny whistle. Polly (Anneke Wills), sailor Ben Jackson (Michael Craze), Highlander Jamie (Frazer Hines), Victoria (Deborah Watling) and future astro-physicist Zoe (Wendy Padbury all assisted him).
The Third Doctor Badge
The first Doctor filmed in colour, Pertwee’s Doctor (1970-74) was a 1970s dandy in frilled shirts and velvet suits. He was also a bit of an action man. The Time Lords stranded him on Earth as a punishment, forcing him to regenerate. Pertwee’s Doctor worked with military taskforce UNIT to save the planet from creatures like the Autons, Silurians, Sea Devils, Sontarans and renegade Time Lord the Master Liz Shaw (Caroline John), Jo Grant (Katy Manning) and journalist Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen)all assisted this Doctor.
The Fourth Doctor Badge
The longest serving incarnation of the Doctor to date, Tom Baker played the role from 1974 to 1981. A tall figure with boggling eyes and wild curly hair. Baker’s Doctor favoured an absurdly long scarf and frock coat with pockets stuffed full of useful junk and bags of jelly babies. Baker’s Doctor is brooding and eccentric and the one most frequently referenced to in popular culture. His assistants included Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen), Harry Sullivan (Ian Marter), the savage Leela (Louise Jameson), robot dog K-9, Time Lord Romana (Mary Tamm and Lalla Ward), Adric (Matthew Waterhouse), Nyssa (Sarah Sutton) and air hostess Tegan (Janet Fielding).
The Fifth Doctor Badge
Davison took on the role between 1981 and 1984. His costume was based on an Edwardian cricketers’ outfit, down to the cricket ball carried in his pocket. Adric (Matthew Waterhouse), Nyssa (Sarah Sutton), air hostess Tegan (Janet Fielding), alien assassin Turlough (Mark Strickson), the android Kamelion (Gerald Flood) and Peri (Nicola Bryant) all assisted him.
The Sixth Doctor Badge
Kitted out in a multi-coloured frock coat, yellow trousers and orange spats Baker’s Doctor was bombastic and overbearing egoist. However, beneath this brash exterior he retained a strong sense of morality and empathy. He played the role between 1984 and 1986. Peri (Nicola Brown), Mel (Bonnie Langford) assisted him. He was put on trial by his own people, the Time Lords.
The Seventh Doctor Badge
McCoy played the Doctor from 1987 to the series cancellation in 1989. He began as an outwardly bumbling eccentric with the habit of playing the spoons. Later he developed into a cunning manipulator of his enemies. His assistants were Mel (Bonnie Langford) and later Ace (Sophie Aldred). McCoy made a brief appearance as the 7th Doctor in the 1996 TV Movie before regenerating into Paul McGann.
The Eighth Doctor Badge
McGann’s Doctor took on the role for the 1996 made-for-television film. He regenerated in a San Francisco hospital mortuary after being caught in a gangland shooting. The Doctor fought his old enemy the Master for the fate of the earth on Millennium Eve. In the film he shared a kiss with Dr. Grace Holloway (Daphne Ashbrook). Although critically well received, this one off adventure was ultimately unsuccessful as a pilot for a new series
The Ninth Doctor Badge
His dark leather jacket and his cropped hair reflected his sombre post- time War attitude. The Ninth Doctor had lost none of his flair for finding trouble. He travelled with shop worker Rose and later with 51st-century Time Agent Jack, on trips to Earth. They would have eventful reunions with Rose’s mum Jackie and boyfriend Mickey.
The Tenth Doctor Badge
With his suits, long coat, trainers and spiky hair, the Tenth Doctor was the epitome of geek chic, stopping universal miscreants with his Sonic Screwdriver or jest a clever piece of misdirection. He journeyed with Rose, Jack and Mickey, as well as junior medic Marth, secretarial temp Donna and her lively grandfather Wilf.
The Eleventh Doctor Badge
This Doctor is a bundle of manic energy coupled with a dangerous curiosity. He travelled initially with ‘the-girl-who-waited’ Amy and her nurse boyfriend (later husband) Rory. He then shared the TARDIS with the enigmatic and cheeky Clara.
Dalek Badge
The Daleks are a fictional alien race that first appeared in the 1963 Doctor Who serial ‘The Daleks’. Science-fiction writer Terry Nation conceived them. Raymond Cusick designed the costumes.
Although an enemy of the Doctor the Daleks are one of the most popular of the range of Doctor Who brooches and badges and have been seen in many episodes of the series. You can check out more details via the Tardis Fandom site.

Gold Dalek Brooch
The Dalek first appeared on our TV screens in 1963. They hailed from the planet Skaro.
This Dalek postage stamp badge is crafted using a postage stamp from the Royal Mail collection titled Classic TV which was celebrating 50 years of Dr Who from 1963 – 2013. It features a golden coloured Dalek with a break out detail which has been highlighted using a gold reflective paper.
The Cybermen Badge
Cybermen, a race of cyborgs, are another persistent enemy of the Doctor and the universe since first appearing in 1966. They are emotionless, populating their numbers by capturing and converting humans or other species. This Cyberman postage stamp is held within a vintage slide mount. A silver glitter paper is added to highlight the breakout detail of the extending hand.
The TARDIS Badge
The TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimension in Space) is shaped like a Police Box but to passers-by, the perception filter makes it blend in with its surroundings. The outside is limited in size but inside, it contains many rooms, corridors and storage spaces. It transports the passengers to a certain place in time. This Tardis postage stamp sits on top of a sky like paper, making it look as though it is flying through the universe.
The Ood Badge
An alien species the Ood uses telepathy to communicate. They carry a ‘translation sphere’ to those who are non-telepathic. Due to their telepathic communication, they are vulnerable to other beings that use this means of transmitting messages making them susceptible to evil. If taken over by an evil force, the Ood’s eyes change colour to red and they use their spheres as weapons, when thrown at a target, cause death by electrocution. This Ood postage stamp brooch is fashioned using one of the Royal Mail collection titled Classic TV which was celebrating 50 years of Dr Who from 1963 – 2013. It features an Ood holding its communication sphere which, highlighted using additional silver glitter paper.
The Weeping Angel Badge
The Doctor describes the Angels as “the only psychopaths in the universe to kill you nicely”. Taking the form of angel statues, if not seen, they follow their victims at immense speed and silently. If seen, then they frieze but even within a blink of an eye, they can move metres. Their appearance also changes when in pursuit and closing in on their target. They become more beast like with pointed teeth and claws. The Weeping Angels can feed once their victim is touched. Their prey is sent through time to their past and the energy released by reliving that moment to the present. This provides the energy to sustain the Angels. The Weeping Angel postage stamp shows them changing form to more beast like. The cut away wing and hand is accentuated by the use of silver glitter paper.
