The painting was commissioned in 1503 by Francesco Del Giocondo, a wealthy merchant and the subject of the painting, his wife. In 1517 Da Vinci travelled to France at the invitation of the King. He took his favourite painting with him, The Mona Lisa, to continue working on it but on his death, only two years later, it was sold to King Francis I. It stayed in the Royal Collection until being acquired in 1797 by the French Republic after the revolution and has been hanging in the Louvre Museum, Paris ever since.
